Compare the cost of an accepted, wearable outcome—not garment prices alone. Use current written quotations for equivalent specifications wherever possible; label any non-equivalence.

What belongs in delivered cost?

Delivered cash cost = garment + fitting fees + shipping + applicable import charges and clearance costs + payment/FX costs + local alterations + incremental travel + other applicable charges not already included.

Keep executive time separate. Do not assign an entire pre-existing business trip to the suit, but do include extra nights, journeys or changed arrangements caused by the commission.

For each line, identify whether it is fixed, estimated, included elsewhere or unresolved. A zero must mean genuinely zero—not “nobody has checked.” Avoid counting the same alteration allowance in both the baseline and a correction scenario.

What are the current US import cautions?

Shipped orders and accompanied baggage must be assessed separately.

  • Shipped purchases: do not use the old assumption that a parcel below $800 automatically enters duty-free. CBP’s June 24, 2026 interim final rule implemented an indefinite suspension of the de minimis exemption for non-postal arrivals. CBP’s October 2026 low-value-shipment proposal also describes the continuing suspension; the proposal’s new procedural changes should not be confused with already-effective requirements. (govinfo.gov)
  • Accompanied purchases: CBP says the usual returning-traveler personal exemption is $800, subject to exceptions and conditions. Its guidance distinguishes items accompanying the traveler from items sent later, which cannot simply be placed under that $800 accompanied allowance. (help.cbp.gov)
  • Classification and rates: obtain an entry-date estimate using the actual garment details and shipping route. The USITC’s latest announced HTS release found for this research was 2026 Revision 21, published October 9, 2026. This report does not quote one blanket Vietnam-suit tariff percentage. (usitc.gov)

Ask the carrier or broker to document the classification basis, origin, declared value, applicable charges, clearance fees and who pays them. If the seller claims a delivered price includes everything, require that obligation and its exclusions in writing. Recheck before dispatch.

How quickly can an apparent saving disappear?

The following figures are invented solely to demonstrate the worksheet. They are not supplier quotations, average prices or tariff estimates.

Cost component Illustrative Vietnamese commission
Suit $1,500
Separate fitting fees $100
Shipping $80
Payment/FX costs $30
Planned local alterations $150
Incremental travel $0
Import and clearance charges I — unresolved variable
Delivered baseline $1,860 + I

Assume a comparable domestic alternative costs $2,300 all-in in this fictional example.

Remaining cash advantage = $440 − I. That is also the maximum additional unplanned correction expenditure before the two routes cost the same, assuming everything else remains unchanged.

Scenario Overseas cash total Difference from the $2,300 domestic option
Assume I = $180 purely for arithmetic $2,040 $260 lower
Same assumption plus $400 of additional correction work $2,440 $140 higher
Same assumption plus $600 of incremental travel $2,640 $340 higher

Do not attach probabilities to these scenarios without evidence. Show the executive the amount that can go wrong before the economics stop being attractive, then ask whether the service remains worthwhile on non-price grounds.
