How to Commission a Bespoke Business Suit in Vietnam Yourself: A US Executive’s Step-by-Step Buying Plan
How to commission a bespoke business suit in Vietnam yourself
A practical buying plan for US executives: choose the fitting route, verify the tailor, specify the garment, control the deposit, manage delivery and resolve problems before ordering a wardrobe.
Research checked October 16, 2026.
What is the safest way to do this yourself?
Commission one pilot suit, make the fitting process part of the written order, and identify who pays for corrections before paying a deposit. Compare the cost of a wearable result—not merely the garment price—with a US alternative.
For this guide, bespoke means an individually developed pattern and a fitting-led process that permits substantive adjustment. This is a buying standard, not a claim that every business using the word follows one legally uniform process. The Savile Row Bespoke Association provides a useful craft benchmark: individual patterns supervised by a master cutter, with intermediate fittings described in its process literature. Its standards should not be mistaken for certification of a Vietnamese supplier. (savilerowbespoke.com)
Full-canvas construction is a separate question. Canvas describes an internal layer of the jacket; it does not establish how the pattern was developed or whether the buyer will receive meaningful intermediate fittings. (propercloth.com)
This research reviewed published material, not completed test commissions. Supplier capabilities, prices and schedules below remain supplier-stated unless explicitly identified otherwise. No Vietnamese workshop–US fitting partnership was verified in this research.
The checklists, approval rules and administrative time allowances are desk-designed recommendations, not measured industry averages, contractual rights or guarantees of fit.
What does the complete DIY project involve?
Treat the purchase as a small personal project with a single coordinator. An assistant can manage correspondence; the wearer should approve style, comfort and fit.
| Stage | Who you contact | Document you produce | Decision before proceeding |
|---|---|---|---|
| Define the purchase | Wearer; assistant or stylist if used | One-page commission brief | Is overseas commissioning appropriate? |
| Establish an alternative | Local custom retailer or tailoring house | Comparable domestic quotation | What would staying local cost? |
| Shortlist Vietnamese suppliers | Atelier manager, then the proposed cutter | Evidence comparison | Can the actual service meet the brief? |
| Confirm specification | Cutter; cloth merchant if necessary | Cloth and construction sheet | Is the garment precisely described? |
| Confirm access and cost | Atelier scheduler; carrier or broker | Fitting calendar and delivered-cost worksheet | Is there enough time and budget? |
| Agree the order | Contracting seller; any separate fitter | Order, payment milestones and remedy terms | Who owns each problem? |
| Attend fittings | Cutter or authorized fitter | Dated fitting log | Are material issues resolved before finishing? |
| Collect or receive | Seller; carrier; customs contact | Inspection record and shipping documents | Is the order complete and accurately declared? |
| Correct and evaluate | Seller; approved local tailor | Correction authorization and revised fit record | Is the pilot successful enough to repeat? |
Suggested administrative allowance: reserve roughly 8–12 hours, excluding appointments and travel, for the brief, supplier comparison, specification, scheduling, paperwork and delivery review. This is a planning allowance for this workflow—not a finding about average buyer behavior. Complex fit or disputed delivery can require more.
1. Which buying route should you choose?
Choose the route around access to fitting and correction—not around the lowest advertised price. Use the following as a decision framework.
Route A: Commission and complete the suit during a Vietnam visit
Use this route when the supplier can book the actual fitting stages within your itinerary, including time to assess corrections before departure.
Ask for appointments, not merely a completion date. A promised collection on your final afternoon leaves you with no local contingency if the garment still needs work.
Route B: Attend intermediate fittings in Vietnam, then receive the finished suit in the US
This is an advertised option at Filo Bespoke: its traveler guide describes a local fitting followed by international shipment when collection is impractical. That is evidence of an offered route, not proof of its outcome for your commission. (filobespoke.com)
Before selecting it, settle how you will inspect the completed garment, who authorizes US alterations and what happens if local alteration is insufficient.
Route C: Start remotely from the US
Require a written explanation of the remote process. DUAN, for example, advertises virtual tailoring and worldwide delivery alongside separate bespoke, made-to-measure and express services; those labels should not be treated as interchangeable descriptions of one process. (duantailor.com)
For a first commission, ask whether you receive a trial garment, an unfinished fitting garment or only the finished suit. For a difficult-fit buyer, this guide recommends declining a route that offers no credible way to diagnose and correct structural issues.
Route D: Use a claimed US fitting partner
Verify both parties independently. Ask the US business to confirm its relationship, exact scope, fees and authority to approve a remake.
A person who takes measurements is not necessarily accepting responsibility for the finished garment. Do not pay a premium for US support until that support is described in the order.
When should you stay local instead?
Choose a domestic alternative—or postpone—if your deadline leaves no room for correction, you cannot attend the proposed fittings, or the seller will not allocate responsibility for an unsuccessful result. Do not assume domestic custom means refundable: Hall Madden’s published FAQ states that its custom sales are final. (hallmadden.com)
2. What should your first-suit commission brief contain?
Send the same brief to each candidate so that quotations answer the same problem. Avoid beginning with a request for a discounted three-suit package.
Use this copyable structure:
Purchase: One pilot two-piece business suit; additional garments require separate approval.
Use: Client meetings, board presentations, travel or another stated purpose; expected wearing frequency.
Location of use: Home city, typical indoor conditions and relevant seasonal needs—not just the weather in Vietnam.
Appearance: Preferred silhouette, shoulder structure, jacket length, trouser rise and fullness; two or three reference images with notes explaining what I like.
Existing fit problems: Describe observable problems and discomfort rather than prescribing cutting changes.
Budget: Maximum delivered cash cost in US dollars, including a separate correction allowance.
Dates: Vietnam appointment windows, US availability, departure date and first-wear date.
Route: In-person completion, local fitting plus shipment, remote first order or named US-supported service.
Required confirmation: Pattern process, fitting stages, cloth reference, construction, payment schedule and correction responsibility.
Bring a reference garment, but explain its limitations. Identify what you want preserved and what you want changed. Proper Cloth’s fitting guidance similarly recommends bringing a preferred jacket or trousers and wearing the kind of shirt and shoes intended for the outfit. (propercloth.com)
For a conservative first commission, this desk suggests limiting experimentation: one principal style reference, restrained detailing and a silhouette the tailor already demonstrates competently. This is an editorial risk-control choice, not a universal dress rule.
Output: save the brief with a version date. Changes after approval should be recorded separately, rather than scattered across messaging threads.
3. How do you build a Vietnamese tailor shortlist without relying on rankings?
Look for relevant process evidence, then ask whether it applies to your exact order. A search for the best bespoke tailor in Vietnam should end with a small evidence comparison—not a popularity contest.
The following are discovery leads, not endorsements or an ordered ranking.
| Candidate | Published information worth investigating | Contact route | What remains to be confirmed |
|---|---|---|---|
| TIE MEN — Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi | Describes individually drafted paper patterns and successive fittings. | Official appointment form. | Assigned cutter, commission-specific schedule, price and overseas remedies. (tiemen.vn) |
| Binh Tailor — Ho Chi Minh City | Separates bespoke from MTM and describes a structural basted fitting. | Official appointment channel; published WhatsApp +84 702 786 178. | Which service is quoted, fitting access and post-departure responsibility. (binhtailor.com.vn) |
| Filo Bespoke — Ho Chi Minh City | Publishes traveler-oriented appointments, shipment options and price tiers. | filobespokehouse@gmail.com. | Exact cloth, construction, final inspection and correction terms. (filobespoke.com) |
| BeBe Tailor — Hoi An | Publishes design, measurement, fitting and collection stages, and advertises additional fittings. | contact@bebetailor.com. | Whether the quoted suit includes individual pattern development and unfinished structural fitting—not merely finished-garment adjustment. (bebetailor.com) |
Recheck locations immediately before booking. TIE MEN announced that its partnership at its former Da Nang address ended on October 15, 2026. It describes a new showroom as anticipated in early November 2026, not as already open. This is a concrete reason not to reuse an older directory address without confirmation. (tiemen.vn)
What evidence should you request?
Ask each candidate for:
- Two recent business-suit examples relevant to your preferred silhouette and fit concerns.
- An explanation of the specific pattern and fitting process being quoted.
- The names or roles of the people measuring, cutting, making and correcting.
- A dated quotation with exclusions.
- A realistic appointment calendar.
- Written alteration, remake and cancellation terms.
- If available, a consented reference from an overseas customer whose order required correction—not only one whose initial collection went smoothly.
Record each answer as supplier-stated, document-supported, independently confirmed or unresolved. A website statement is independently observable as a statement; the underlying workshop capability is not thereby independently verified.
Is Hoi An or Ho Chi Minh City better for a business suit?
Do not assign a quality grade to a city. Compare the proposed commission. BeBe’s published customer journey and Binh’s published structural-fitting description provide different information, but they do not establish comparative workmanship or failure rates. (bebetailor.com)
Prefer the candidate whose style, fitting access and correction arrangements match your needs—even if another city has more enthusiastic travel reviews.
4. How do you verify bespoke workmanship, construction and cloth?
Audit these as three separate purchases. A good answer about fabric does not answer the pattern question; a good answer about canvas does not answer the fitting question.
A. What exactly is the pattern and fitting process?
Ask:
- Is a pattern developed individually for this commission, or is an existing block adjusted?
- Who makes the cutting decisions?
- What state will the garment be in at each fitting?
- Which changes remain possible at that stage?
- How are left-right differences, posture and balance addressed?
- Are fitting changes recorded for future orders?
- Will the same cutter review the garment after correction?
DUAN’s published service descriptions distinguish an individual-pattern bespoke offer from MTM using adjusted master blocks. Use that distinction as a question for every quote rather than assuming the business name determines the service. (duantailor.com)
A basted fitting alone is not conclusive proof of bespoke. Last & Lapel explicitly advertises a basted fitting within its B&Tailor made-to-measure program. Equally, do not assume every MTM system lacks posture adjustments: Proper Cloth publishes multiple shoulder-slope options. (lastandlapel.com)
The practical question is: Can this process address my actual fit problem, and can I access it?
B. What internal construction are you buying?
| Term | What to establish in writing |
|---|---|
| Full canvas | Whether canvas extends through the jacket front; the specified canvas and shoulder structure. |
| Half canvas | Where the canvas ends and what supports the remaining front. |
| Fused construction | Which areas use bonded interfacing and whether that matches the quote. |
| Soft or structured shoulder | Padding and sleeve-head treatment—not merely a promotional style label. |
| Handwork | Which operations are performed by hand, rather than accepting an undefined handmade claim. |
Proper Cloth’s construction guide explains that full and half canvas differ in coverage, while shoulder padding and sleeve-head construction are additional variables. The buyer implication is to specify these separately rather than treating full canvas as a complete quality description. (propercloth.com)
Recommended verification: ask to see a comparable unfinished jacket and request commission-linked progress evidence where practical. Treat a pinch test, a finished photograph or a generic workshop video as a clue—not final proof of the hidden construction in your garment.
C. How do you verify Italian wool or other named cloth?
Create a cloth specification sheet containing:
- Mill or merchant name.
- Collection or bunch name.
- Exact article and color reference.
- Fiber composition.
- Stated weight, including whether it is per square meter or linear meter.
- Cloth width if relevant to interpreting the stated weight.
- Weave or finish description supplied by the merchant.
- Stock status and procurement lead time.
- A photographed swatch or retained sample.
- A written prohibition on substitution without your approval.
For expensive branded cloth, ask whether the merchant can corroborate the reference and supply route. Vitale Barberis Canonico, for example, describes a batch-based digital passport accessible through QR codes requested by its customers. Availability for your particular cloth must be checked; a generic brand logo is not equivalent to that batch information. (vitalebarberiscanonico.com)
What wool weight is best for a business suit in a hot climate?
Do not select on a Super number alone. Woolmark explains that the Super S designation concerns wool-fiber fineness; it is not a complete specification of the finished fabric. Woolmark’s technical material also identifies yarn choice, weave geometry, density and finishing as variables affecting textile performance. (woolmark.com)
This guide does not prescribe one universal weight. Ask the tailor to compare two or three actual cloth references for your home climate, indoor use, desired drape and wearing frequency. Record the weight units and consider lining and jacket construction alongside the cloth.
Approval rule: no cutting until the exact cloth, construction and service category are acknowledged in writing.
5. How much does a bespoke suit in Vietnam actually cost?
Published starting prices are useful for screening, but this research does not establish a representative national average for genuinely bespoke executive suits. Get a quotation for the specified garment and process.
What published price anchors can you use?
| Published offer | Advertised price | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Filo two-piece suit, entry-level imported fabric | From VND 6,700,000 | Starting-point screening only; request composition and construction. |
| Filo mid-range traveler-guide tier | VND 10,000,000–20,000,000 | A supplier-specific range, not a Vietnam market average. |
| Filo premium tier | Above VND 20,000,000 | Exact cloth and process still require quotation. |
| Hall Madden half-canvas starter suit | US$1,100 | US-facing service benchmark. |
| Hall Madden full-canvas custom suit | From US$1,425 | Compare fitting and remedies, not just canvas. |
| Hall Madden Made in Italy custom suit | From US$2,250 | A different production offer, not a like-for-like Vietnam bespoke comparison. |
Sources: Filo’s published pricing and traveler guide; Hall Madden’s FAQ. These are advertised prices, not binding quotations, and the services are not established as equivalent. Keep Vietnamese quotations in VND until you obtain a dated payment-conversion quote. (filobespoke.com)
What belongs in your Vietnam-versus-US cost calculator?
Use:
Delivered cash cost = garment + separately charged fittings + shipping/insurance + import duties and clearance charges + applicable state/local tax + payment/FX costs + alterations + incremental travel.
Make every line either quoted, buyer-assumed or unresolved. Use zero only where you have established that no charge applies.
Include Vietnamese taxes or surcharges in the supplier’s garment total where applicable, rather than discovering them at settlement. Ask the seller to specify what is included.
Compare both routes on the same basis: jacket and trousers, cloth reference or credible equivalent, construction, fitting access, taxes, alteration policy and delivery. A US-facing service is not necessarily US manufacture or individual-pattern bespoke.
How quickly can apparent savings disappear?
The following inputs are illustrative budgeting assumptions, not vendor quotations or duty estimates:
| Cost item | Example |
|---|---|
| Vietnamese garment | $1,200 |
| Separate fitting/assessment | $100 |
| Shipping | $80 |
| Payment and FX costs | $35 |
| Planned local alteration allowance | $150 |
| Extra travel for this purchase | $0 |
| Subtotal before unresolved import charges and state/local tax | $1,565 |
| Comparable domestic quote, assumed all-in | $1,900 |
Let I be import and clearance charges and T be applicable state/local tax not already paid.
- Base overseas scenario: $1,565 + I + T.
- An additional $300 correction: $1,865 + I + T.
- An additional $500 of travel instead: $2,065 + I + T.
In the base scenario, the overseas option has only $335 of headroom before unresolved charges erase the apparent saving. After the additional correction, that headroom is $35. These are arithmetic scenarios, not forecasts of what will happen.
What should you allow for US alterations?
Obtain a garment-specific quote. One published US shop menu lists base prices of $44 for jacket sleeve adjustment, $33 for taking in jacket sides, $24 for a regular trouser hem and $25 for a waist adjustment. Those are local menu prices, not national averages or prices for reconstructing a jacket. (sewcotur.com)
Do not mistake an alteration allowance for an expected repair bill. Proper Cloth’s policy, for example, provides up to $125 in store credit for eligible suit alterations, subject to conditions; that is a commercial policy, not evidence that $125 fixes any suit. (propercloth.com)
Keep executive time separate. If you choose to value it in dollars, use your own rate and show that assumption explicitly.
6. How long should you allow, and how do you test the itinerary?
There is no defensible universal Vietnam bespoke turnaround in the sources reviewed. Published schedules describe different services and should not be blended into an average.
| Published process | Stated timing | What it does—and does not—establish |
|---|---|---|
| Filo traveler schedule | Consultation on days 1–2; first fitting on days 7–9; delivery on days 10–12 | A specific advertised sequence to confirm for your order. (filobespoke.com) |
| DUAN express service | 24–48 hours | An express offer; it does not establish that every step of its separately described bespoke process occurs within that window. (duantailor.com) |
| Savile Row Bespoke Association process literature | Approximately three months and three intermediate fittings | A traditional craft benchmark, not a required Vietnamese lead time. (savilerowbespoke.com) |
| Hall Madden first order with a wear date | Recommends budgeting eight weeks | A domestic comparison, not an immediate fallback. (hallmadden.com) |
What should the calendar show?
Require the supplier to fill in:
- Cloth confirmation and arrival.
- Initial consultation and measurements.
- Pattern development and cutting.
- First unfinished fitting, if included.
- Subsequent fitting or correction review.
- Final inspection.
- Collection or dispatch.
- US inspection and any correction appointment.
For each stage, record the date, location, responsible person, garment state and what happens if it slips.
Keep four dates separate: measurement date, fitting date, dispatch date and wearable-by date. Do not allow a shipping promise to substitute for a completed-fit promise.
How would a ten-day Vietnam visit work?
Using Filo’s published sequence as an example—not a booking—a buyer leaving on day 10 might attend the first fitting on days 7–9 but cannot assume in-person collection by departure, because delivery is advertised for days 10–12. The appropriate choices are to obtain a different confirmed schedule, arrange shipment with written remedies, extend the stay or decline. (filobespoke.com)
Suggested buffer rule: require at least one genuinely usable correction window before final local acceptance. The duration must come from the tailor’s workflow; an extra appointment on departure morning is not much contingency.
Confirm holidays, workshop closures and the cutter’s availability directly. Do not infer them from showroom opening hours.
7. What must be agreed before you pay a deposit?
Buy the process and remedy in writing, not just the finished object. There is no market-wide deposit percentage established by this research; negotiate the actual supplier’s terms.
What belongs in the commission agreement?
| Item | Minimum buyer question |
|---|---|
| Contracting party | Who is legally selling the garment, receiving payment and issuing the invoice? |
| Specification | Which cloth, construction, style and service category are included? |
| Fittings | Which stages are included, where, and with whom? |
| Payment milestones | What triggers the deposit, later payment and balance? |
| Changes | What can be changed before cloth ordering, before cutting and afterward? |
| Cancellation | What happens to the deposit at each stage? |
| Delivery | Is the commitment collection, dispatch or arrival? |
| Local alterations | Who approves the work, who pays, and is reimbursement cash or credit? |
| Remakes | Who decides necessity, what is the deadline, and what happens if cloth is unavailable? |
| Logistics | Who pays outbound and return shipping, clearance charges and any repeat-entry costs? |
| Unsuccessful correction | Is there a further attempt, partial refund, full refund or no additional remedy? |
| Records and privacy | How are measurements, fit changes and photographs retained, used and deleted? |
These are negotiating questions, not assertions that any particular remedy is legally mandatory.
How should you divide responsibilities?
Fill in one named contact per row:
| Responsibility | Name/business | Authority that must be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Measurement | ___ | Can explain and reconcile the measurement method. |
| Cutting and pattern changes | ___ | Can authorize structural changes before completion. |
| Making and quality control | ___ | Can confirm specification and production status. |
| US assessment, if used | ___ | Can inspect and report; may or may not approve remedies. |
| Remedy decision | ___ | Can approve spending, remake or refund. |
| Shipping and customs coordination | ___ | Can provide documents and resolve carrier queries. |
If the workshop and fitter are separate businesses, request joint written acknowledgment of this allocation. Do not leave the buyer to discover their disagreement after delivery.
Can you rely on a credit-card chargeback?
No. Ask your issuer about the specific overseas custom-garment transaction before paying. CFPB guidance describes billing-error notice deadlines generally running 60 days from the charge appearing on the statement, and separately describes conditions affecting the right to withhold an unpaid balance. A long production schedule makes it important to check deadlines early. (consumerfinance.gov)
Regulation Z distinguishes goods not accepted or not delivered as agreed from a dispute about the quality of goods already accepted. Do not treat a credit card as an unconditional fit guarantee or assume the same dispute route applies to every problem. (consumerfinance.gov)
Practical rule: use a traceable payment channel, retain the agreed specification and calendar issuer deadlines. If the seller requires full payment before shipment, recognize that your remaining leverage is the agreed remedy and applicable payment protections—not an unpaid balance.
8. What should you do at each fitting?
Describe observations, ask the cutter to diagnose them, and record the agreed action. Do not try to become a pattern cutter during a rushed appointment.
Before the appointment
- Bring the shirt and shoes intended for the suit.
- Bring any reference garment already discussed.
- Restate which preferences are fixed and which are negotiable.
- Ask permission for consistent front, back and side photographs.
- Ask who will explain the fit and authorize changes.
Using the intended accompanying garments and a preferred reference item is consistent with Proper Cloth’s published fitting preparation advice. (propercloth.com)
At the unfinished or structural fitting
Ask the fitter to review:
- Shoulder width and slope.
- Collar contact and the garment’s balance in your normal stance.
- Chest and waist room.
- Sleeve position and movement.
- Jacket length and intended silhouette.
- Trouser waist position, rise, seat and thigh room.
Prioritize these before cosmetic details. Proper Cloth notes that changing jacket shoulder width is not straightforward because it affects other parts of the garment; its guidance also shows that different shoulder-slope problems can require different remedies. (propercloth.com)
Do not accept a generic promise that every structural problem can be fixed cheaply after you return home.
At the trouser fitting
Sit, stand and walk normally. Observe discomfort, tension around the fly, pocket openings and whether the legs settle after sitting. Proper Cloth’s trouser guidance identifies hip tightness and restricted lower-leg drape as issues worth assessing; these observations should lead to a fitter’s diagnosis, not an automatic instruction to shorten or taper. (propercloth.com)
What should the fitting log look like?
| Observation | Agreed action | Responsible person | Recheck date | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Left sleeve appears longer in normal stance | Fitter to reassess and specify correction | ___ | ___ | Open |
| Discomfort when seated | Review trouser rise, seat and available room | ___ | ___ | Open |
| Silhouette differs from approved reference | Confirm whether construction can be adjusted | ___ | ___ | Open |
These are illustrative entries, not diagnoses.
Send the log after each appointment and ask the tailor to acknowledge it. Distinguish required correction, buyer-requested style change and accepted characteristic so that later disagreements do not depend on memory.
At the final fitting
Recheck every open item before approving completion. Inspect lining, seams, closures, pockets, buttons and the agreed details. Confirm that both jacket and trousers correspond to the order.
Do not let garment collection become automatic approval of a second commission. If an issue remains, record it and agree the next action before leaving.
9. How do you bring the suit back or ship it to the US?
Treat accompanied baggage and an international shipment as separate import routes. Do not copy one exemption or tariff assumption across both.
If you carry the suit home
Keep the invoice and a list of your purchases. CBP describes a returning-resident personal exemption commonly amounting to $800, subject to eligibility conditions including time abroad and prior use of the exemption. It is not an allowance for every individual suit. Confirm your eligibility and the treatment of purchases above the allowance with CBP. (cbp.gov)
Follow the applicable declaration process and answer questions accurately. Do not plan around whether an officer is likely to collect a charge.
If the tailor ships the suit
Do not assume a shipment below $800 is duty-free. The June 24, 2026 Federal Register rule addresses indefinite suspension of the de minimis exemption for non-postal arrivals. CBP’s October 8, 2026 proposed postal-entry rule also describes the broad de minimis suspension as the existing baseline; its proposed procedural changes should not be confused with rules already in force. (govinfo.gov)
This research does not establish one current all-in duty rate for a suit shipped from Vietnam. Obtain a dated estimate for the actual garment and entry route rather than copying an old percentage from a travel article.
Send the carrier’s clearance team or a licensed customs broker:
- Garment description and number of pieces.
- Fiber composition and woven/knitted construction as confirmed by the maker.
- Manufacturing country and seller details.
- Transaction value, currency and invoice.
- Shipping method and estimated arrival date.
- Whether this is an original delivery, alteration return or replacement.
Ask the clearance professional to confirm:
- Classification and applicable charges at the expected entry date.
- Whether additional country-specific measures apply.
- Brokerage, disbursement or other carrier fees.
- Who is responsible for clearance and payment.
- Documentation needed if the suit later travels back for correction.
Use the USITC Harmonized Tariff Schedule as the official tariff lookup, with professional help where classification is uncertain. Do not select a code merely because it yields a lower charge. (hts.usitc.gov)
What should the seller provide before dispatch?
Request a commercial invoice, packing details, tracking, the agreed garment description, care instructions and photographs documenting completion. Ask for truthful values and descriptions; do not accept a fictitious gift declaration or reduced invoice.
Make the payer for import and carrier charges explicit. If the seller says everything is included, request the exact scope and the process for handling an unexpected carrier bill.
Are federal import charges the only tax issue?
Not necessarily. California’s tax authority, for example, explains that use tax can apply to foreign purchases and that federal duty exemption does not itself establish exemption from California use tax. Its hand-carried and shipped-purchase rules also differ. That is a California example, not a national rule—check your own state’s revenue authority. (cdtfa.ca.gov)
10. What happens if the delivered suit does not fit?
Document the problem before authorizing outside work. Preserve the option to use the seller’s remedy rather than accidentally choosing a different one.
On arrival:
- Check the contents against the invoice and specification.
- Try the suit indoors with the intended shirt and shoes.
- Record consistent photographs and specific observations.
- Notify the seller promptly using the agreed channel.
- Request an assessment and written remedy proposal.
- Obtain approval before a local tailor cuts, alters or reconstructs anything.
Return and alteration conditions can conflict. Proper Cloth’s published policy illustrates the point: tailored clothing must meet unworn, unwashed and unaltered conditions for certain returns, while garments altered locally are excluded from complimentary remakes and returns under that policy. Your Vietnamese seller may have different terms; establish them before taking action. (propercloth.com)
How should you decide between alteration, remake and abandonment?
| Situation | Next step |
|---|---|
| A limited adjustment appears feasible | Obtain a local written scope and price; secure seller authorization. |
| Shoulder or other structural concern | Seek a technical assessment before accepting a routine alteration allowance. |
| Wrong cloth or materially wrong specification | Preserve the garment and records; request a remedy against the written order. |
| Seller proposes a remake | Confirm new specification, deadline, cloth, shipping and responsibility if the second attempt fails. |
| Seller is unresponsive | Preserve correspondence and consult the issuer promptly about applicable dispute options. |
The structural distinction matters: Proper Cloth’s shoulder guidance warns that shoulder-width alteration can involve multiple other garment areas and may justify considering a remake. (propercloth.com)
For payment disputes, distinguish non-delivery or non-acceptance from dissatisfaction with accepted goods. Contact the issuer rather than assuming a general 60-day quality guarantee. (consumerfinance.gov)
Economic stopping rule: compare the next proposed expenditure with the remaining value of the result and your domestic alternative. Do not spend indefinitely merely because you have already paid a deposit.
11. When is it safe to order the rest of the wardrobe?
Only after the pilot succeeds and the successful fit has been recorded. A saved original measurement sheet is not enough if corrections were made later.
Before releasing another garment, check:
- All material defects are resolved.
- You have evaluated comfort in normal use, where doing so is consistent with the acceptance and return terms you chose.
- The approved silhouette and details are recorded.
- The maker has incorporated relevant fitting corrections into the repeat-order record.
- New cloth, construction or styling changes are identified rather than assumed to behave identically.
- The next order’s price, delivery and remedies are confirmed.
The importance of recording alterations is reflected in Proper Cloth’s advice to update saved sizes after local changes. Apply the same record discipline to a bespoke pattern relationship. (propercloth.com)
Ask separately about pattern retention, future access and any ability to obtain a copy. Do not assume that paying for a commission automatically gives you ownership or transfer rights over the tailor’s working materials.
For the next order, preserve what worked and change as little as necessary. If you want a substantially different silhouette, treat it as a new fit-development exercise rather than a frictionless repeat.
12. What should make you pause or walk away?
Use these as buyer decision rules, not allegations about any named supplier:
- The seller will not identify the service being quoted.
- Individual-pattern claims cannot be reconciled with the proposed fitting route.
- The cloth reference or substitution rule remains unresolved.
- The schedule works only if no correction is needed.
- A claimed US partner will not confirm its role independently.
- The workshop and fitter each disclaim responsibility for a failed outcome.
- Import or payment charges are omitted rather than estimated or marked unknown.
- The seller pressures you to release several suits before the first has been evaluated.
- An inaccurate customs invoice is proposed.
- The correction plan requires spending beyond your pre-agreed maximum.
Missing information is not proof of misconduct. It is, however, a reason to delay committing money when the missing item is important to your purchase.
What can you do in the next 48 hours?
- Write the one-page brief and set a delivered-budget ceiling.
- Obtain one credible domestic comparison.
- Contact up to three Vietnamese candidates using the same questions.
- Ask for named fitting stages, not just a completion promise.
- Create a cost sheet with unknown charges visible.
- Identify a local fit assessor and a carrier clearance contact if shipping is contemplated.
- Do not release a wardrobe order or deposit until the material gaps are closed.
Bottom line: the DIY route is viable as a disciplined commission-management process. The decision is not simply Vietnam versus the US; it is whether the particular tailor, fitting route, specification and remedy give you an acceptable path to a wearable suit.

FAQs
How much does a bespoke business suit in Vietnam cost?
There is no representative national average established by this research. Filo publishes a two-piece starting price of VND 6,700,000, but your comparison should use a written quote for the actual cloth, construction, fittings, shipping and remedies—not that starting price alone. (filobespoke.com)
How many days should I allow for suit fittings in Vietnam?
Ask for the actual appointment sequence rather than assuming a universal minimum. Filo advertises an initial consultation on days 1–2, a first fitting on days 7–9 and delivery on days 10–12; that supplier-specific schedule is not a guarantee or a national average. (filobespoke.com)
Does full-canvas construction prove that a suit is bespoke?
No: canvas describes the jacket’s internal construction, while bespoke concerns pattern development and the fitting process. Verify those separately, using an individual-pattern process and meaningful fitting access as purchasing criteria. (propercloth.com)
Can a US executive commission a Vietnamese suit remotely?
Remote services are advertised, including by DUAN, but the buyer should establish whether the process includes a trial or intermediate fitting garment and how corrections are handled. For a difficult first fit, this guide recommends proceeding only with a credible structural-correction route and written responsibility for the outcome. (duantailor.com)
Is a suit shipped from Vietnam duty-free if it costs less than $800?
Do not assume so: the former low-value shipment exemption has been broadly suspended, with non-postal suspension addressed in the June 24, 2026 rule and the continuing baseline discussed in CBP’s October 8, 2026 proposal. Obtain a current estimate for the actual garment, classification and shipping route. (govinfo.gov)
Are customs rules different when I carry the suit home?
Yes: accompanied purchases are assessed under returning-traveler rules rather than simply inheriting the shipment exemption rules. CBP describes a commonly applicable $800 personal exemption subject to eligibility conditions; confirm your allowance and account for your other qualifying trip purchases. (cbp.gov)
How large a deposit should I pay a Vietnamese tailor?
This research did not establish a reliable market-wide standard deposit percentage. Negotiate a traceable payment schedule against a complete specification, confirmed fittings and explicit cancellation, alteration and remake terms; do not treat a low deposit as a substitute for those safeguards.
Can a US alterations tailor fix the suit after delivery?
Some adjustments may be feasible, but structural changes should not be assumed to be simple or inexpensive. Proper Cloth’s shoulder guidance notes that changing shoulder width can affect several other areas, so obtain an assessment and the seller’s written authorization before commissioning outside work. (propercloth.com)
Will paying by credit card guarantee a refund if the fit is wrong?
No: applicable dispute routes depend on the circumstances, and billing-error protections are not an unconditional quality guarantee. CFPB guidance distinguishes goods not accepted or not delivered as agreed from quality disputes involving accepted goods; consult your issuer promptly about the transaction and deadlines. (consumerfinance.gov)
Should I order several suits to get a package discount?
This guide recommends one pilot suit first, with later orders held until material fit issues are resolved. Require the successful corrections to be recorded before repeating the order, rather than simply reusing the original measurements.
