Choose the route that makes your required fittings and remedies accessible. The table is a decision framework: its “fits when” and “hold when” columns are recommendations, not claims that every supplier in a category operates identically.
| Purchasing route | What to establish before comparing price | Fits when | Hold or choose another route when |
|---|---|---|---|
| US ready-to-wear plus alterations | Whether a finished garment is already close enough to the desired fit; written alteration scope and total | A suitable garment can be tried on and the remaining work is acceptable | The purchase depends on an unconfirmed promise to reconstruct major features |
| US-served made-to-measure | Available pattern adjustments, appointment access, construction and remake terms | A provider can demonstrate that its system accommodates the buyer’s needs | The fitter cannot explain how a previous fit failure will be addressed |
| Locally accessible bespoke | Individual pattern development, intermediate fittings, cutter access and aftercare | Substantive fit development justifies the appointments and expenditure | The label is explicit but the process is not |
| Visitor-facing Vietnamese custom tailoring | The exact service sold, garment state at each fitting and post-departure remedy | A trip permits the advertised process and the buyer accepts its scope | The flight date becomes the reason to accept unresolved issues |
| Vietnamese fitting-led bespoke | Individual pattern, substantive intermediate fittings and who authorizes recutting | The buyer can attend the necessary stages and wants that house’s work | The itinerary supports measurement and collection only |
| First-order remote Vietnamese tailoring | How fit is evaluated before completion, correction logistics and who pays | The buyer accepts a controlled pilot and has a credible remedy | A difficult fit is being addressed only through measurements and reassurance |
| Remote repeat order from a proven supplier | Updated pattern record, current measurements and changes in cloth or design | A previous commission is genuinely successful | The supplier proposes copying a garment that still has unresolved faults |
| Vietnamese making with US fitting support | The named US party’s actual scope, workshop relationship and contractual responsibility | Local support includes the work the buyer needs and responsibility is clear | “US support” means an introduction to an independent alteration shop |
The underlying process distinctions are substantive. The Savile Row Bespoke Association’s membership requirements include individually cut patterns and master-cutter supervision; DUAN separately describes made-to-measure as modification of master blocks. Those are useful process benchmarks, not proof that one geography automatically produces better results. (savilerowbespoke.com)
Important terminology: “US-served” means the customer has a US-facing service relationship. It does not establish US manufacture. For example, Hall Madden separately advertises a made-in-Italy custom-suit option. (hallmadden.com)
