Pattern development, internal construction and cloth identity are separate purchasing decisions. A full-canvas jacket does not, by itself, establish an individual-pattern bespoke process: DUAN expressly offers half- or full-canvas construction in its made-to-measure service. (duantailor.com)
For this desk, bespoke means an individual pattern developed through a fitting-led process that permits substantive adjustments to posture, balance and silhouette. This is our purchasing definition, not a claim that all sellers use the word consistently.
| Description | Starting point | What the buyer should verify | What the description does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bespoke | An individually developed pattern | Who develops it; how fittings revise it; what records are retained | Guaranteed fit, a particular house style or a universal production time |
| Made-to-measure | An existing pattern or block adjusted for the customer | Which adjustments are available and who determines them | That the service is inferior for every buyer or that it must use fused construction |
| Altered ready-to-wear | A completed garment | Whether the proposed alterations are feasible on that garment | The freedom to redesign every structural feature |
| Custom / handmade / luxury | Insufficiently specific without further explanation | The actual pattern, fitting, construction and cloth commitments | A sufficiently defined service to justify a premium |
The individual-pattern benchmark is supported by the SRBA’s published requirements. Jeff Banks’s made-to-measure explanation describes adapting a standard pattern, while Proper Cloth’s alteration guidance illustrates that finished-garment changes have defined limits. (savilerowbespoke.com)
Which evidence is stronger than the word “bespoke”?
Our recommended evidence hierarchy is:
- Weak: a marketing label, attractive finished photographs or a measurement count.
- More useful: a written explanation of pattern creation, named fitting stages and the cutter’s involvement.
- Stronger: commission-specific records showing the pattern, the garment at an intermediate stage and the changes agreed after fitting.
- Most decision-relevant: a successful pilot, its final specification and a documented route for resolving faults.
Ask what remains adjustable at each appointment. Miller’s Oath, for example, describes a basted first fitting in which the garment can be taken apart and reworked before further assembly. That tells the buyer more about the appointment’s purpose than the phrase “multiple fittings.” (millersoath.com)
